Lewiston police encounter armed suspect, man found dead after standoff

LEWISTON — A tense standoff unfolded overnight after Lewiston Police Department received reports of a man firing a gun along Essex Street late Saturday night.

The incident began at approximately 11:30 p.m. when multiple 911 calls indicated a male subject with a gun in the area.

Witnesses told authorities that the man was actively shooting before the police arrived.

Upon their arrival, the armed suspect shot at the officers and then ran into nearby woods.

Despite being fired upon, Lewiston officers did not return gunfire.

A collaborative effort to contain the situation involved the Lewiston Police, with aid from the Auburn Police Department, Lisbon Police Department, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department, and the Maine State Police.

The Maine State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiators were dispatched to support the search efforts.

After an extensive manhunt lasting until the early hours, at about 3:30 a.m., the suspect was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities identified the deceased as Nathan Savage, a 45-year-old resident of Auburn.

The handgun was recovered near Savage’s body.

His remains have since been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further investigation.

The incident remains under investigation, and no further details have been released at this time.
