GUILFORD — A joint investigation by the Guilford Police Department and federal authorities has led to the arrest of a North Branford town employee on charges related to child pornography.

On June 21, detectives from the Guilford Police Department received a tip from an out-of-state law enforcement agency about possible child pornography activities linked to a residence in Guilford.

The department’s Detective Unit, aided by the Department of Homeland Security, immediately began an investigation.

Authorities executed a search warrant on July 25 at a residence on Flat Iron Road as part of the ongoing investigation.

The residence’s occupant, identified as a Town of North Branford employee, was confirmed as the investigation’s subject.

North Branford officials were promptly informed and took swift action to suspend the employee from work to ensure public safety.

After a thorough review of the evidence obtained during the search, investigators established probable cause to secure an arrest warrant.

Lauren Smith, 45, was served with the arrest warrant on August 16 after it was signed.

She faces charges for possession of child pornography in the first degree under Connecticut General Statutes 53a-196d.

Smith was released on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 19.

The Guilford Police Department highlighted the complexity of such cyber investigations, emphasizing the extensive time, effort, and patience required to conduct them.

The department expressed gratitude for the critical support provided by the Department of Homeland Security, North Branford Police Department, Connecticut State Police, and the Office of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of New Haven.

While an arrest has been made, the investigation remains active, and the department is focused on maintaining its integrity.

The Guilford Police Department encouraged the public to follow their Facebook page for updates on the case.

In a statement, Chief Christopher M. Massey thanked the community for its ongoing support and partnership, committing to the department’s continued efforts to ensure the safety of Guilford and its residents.
