NEWPORT — A high-speed collision at a rural intersection in Coventry back in 2022 has led to a prison sentence for a Texas driver.
Landon Outlaw, 42, from Liberty Hill, will spend two years behind bars following a guilty plea to grossly negligent driving. The charge stems from a September 2022 crash that left two individuals with severe injuries.
Vermont State Police investigators determined that Outlaw’s Toyota Tacoma, traveling north on Route 14, failed to halt at a stop sign. The pickup truck careened across the median and collided head-on with a Ford F-150 heading south on Route 5.
Both vehicles were engulfed in flames moments after collision. A passerby, arriving shortly after impact, described a frantic scene as bystanders rushed to extract the injured from the burning wreckage.
Court records reveal that Judge Thibault handed down a two-to-ten-year sentence, with eight years suspended.
As part of a plea arrangement, prosecutors dropped additional charges, including driving under the influence resulting in injury.
Data retrieved from Outlaw’s vehicle indicated speeds approaching 90 mph in the moments before impact. Both drivers sustained multiple fractures and internal injuries, requiring extensive medical treatment at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire.
