Inmate found unresponsive, dies at Penobscot County Jail

BANGOR — An inmate at the Penobscot County Jail passed away early Wednesday morning after being discovered unresponsive in his housing unit.

The man, whose name has not been released pending family notification, was found at about 7:55 a.m. by correctional officers.

Life-saving efforts were initiated by correctional and on-site medical staff until responders from the Bangor Fire Department arrived on scene.

Despite these efforts, the inmate did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead.

Authorities from the Bangor Police Department and the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) were notified in line with required procedures.

The Bangor Police Department is heading the investigation into the man’s death, and the MDOC is concurrently reviewing the jail’s procedures.

Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest the death was related to a medical or health issue, and there are no signs of criminal or violent actions connected to the incident.
