Barnet man arrested for reckless endangerment, assault after fleeing stolen vehicle scene

BARNET — A man was arrested on Monday after allegedly striking several individuals with a stolen vehicle and then fleeing the scene in Barnet.

Vermont State Police responded to a call at approximately 4:22 a.m. on Aug. 12, where a stolen vehicle had been located at a residence on Knights Ln.

The operator, identified as 31-year-old Jacob Olcott of W.

Burke, reportedly attempted to flee the area in the vehicle but became stuck in a ditch.

Victims Patrick McWilliams, 68, Niamh Johnston-McWilliams, 24, and Joseph Wray, 24, were struck by the vehicle during the incident.

Sorcha Johnston-McWilliams, 32, also reported an operation without consent violation.

Troopers were initially unable to locate Olcott at the scene.

However, on Aug. 13 at approximately 11:42 a.m., St Johnsbury Probation and Parole notified the Vermont State Police that Olcott was present in their office lobby.

State Police took Olcott into custody on charges of reckless endangerment, simple assault, and abuse of a vulnerable adult.

He was processed at the St Johnsbury Barracks and released with a citation to appear in court.
