Springfield police arrest man with loaded gun after threat

SPRINGFIELD — A 23-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning after Springfield police officers seized a loaded firearm from him following a threat to bystanders.

Benny Tran was taken into custody around 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of East Columbus Avenue and Liberty Street, according to the SPD.

The arrest came after officers were called to the 0-100 block of Hampden Street at approximately 4:10 a.m. for reports of a man threatening to shoot people by a food truck.

Officers identified the suspect as Tran and attempted to detain him, but he fled on foot.

After a brief pursuit, Tran jumped down a wall on Gridiron Street but was apprehended by police on East Columbus Avenue.

A loaded firearm was found in his pants pocket during the arrest.

Tran faces charges of carrying a firearm without a license and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.
