Two-vehicle crash on I-91 in Newbury leaves two injured

NEWBURY — A head-on collision on Interstate 91 left two drivers injured Friday afternoon, Vermont State Police said.

The crash occurred around 1:26 p.m. near mile marker 104.2 in Newbury when Tyler Hess, 33, of Jacksonville, Florida, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-91, according to police.

Hess’s 2024 Volkswagen Jetta collided with a southbound 2016 Subaru Legacy driven by Cheong-Hwan Kim, 91, of Barnet.

Both vehicles veered off the west side of the road.

Hess and Kim were transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire for treatment.

Hess is suspected to have minor injuries, while Kim’s injuries are believed to be serious, police said.

Authorities said Hess was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while Kim was.

Both vehicles were totaled in the collision.

Hess was issued a citation to appear in Orange County Criminal Court on charges of gross negligent operation.

Additional charges may be pending as the investigation continues.
