Suspect arrested in July Portland shooting death

PORTLAND — After an extensive investigation, Portland Police announced the arrest of 47-year-old Aaron Karp from Naples on Thursday, August 8, in connection with the July 30 shooting death of 54-year-old Susan McHugh of Gray.

Karp, who was apprehended at the Portland Police Station Thursday evening after he became aware of the arrest warrant, has been charged with murder and is being held at the Cumberland County Jail without bail.

Police Chief Mark Dubois commended his team, stating, “I’d like to thank our investigators who worked so diligently on the case to enable us to make an arrest.

Their tireless efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice are a testament to the hard work they do each and every day.”

Dubois also emphasized the ongoing collaboration with the Office of the Maine Attorney General to strengthen the case against Karp. “This is just the beginning as we will continue to work…for justice for Ms. McHugh,” he said.

The shooting incident, which occurred at 8:45 p.m. on July 30 on the 1110 block of Forest Avenue, resulted in injuries to four individuals who were transported to Maine Medical Center.

McHugh later died from her injuries.

The three other victims, a 45-year-old man from New Hampshire, a 48-year-old man from Yarmouth, and a 51-year-old man from Gray, have been treated and released.

Police have not made any additional arrests, but the investigation continues to be very active.
