SPRINGFIELD — An 18-year-old man on GPS ankle monitoring for pending gun charges was arrested Tuesday evening after police found him with a loaded large capacity firearm, authorities said.

The Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU), led by Sergeants Jaime Bruno and David Robillard and assisted by the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit, apprehended Aaron Carrillo-Vega around 5:20 p.m. on Rodney Smith Jr. Circle.

FIU detectives had been investigating Carrillo-Vega for several months for illegal possession of a firearm.

At the time of the arrest, he was wearing a GPS ankle monitor from a previous case where he was detained and two firearms were seized.

Information that Carrillo-Vega was in possession of another illegal firearm surfaced around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Detectives found him in a parking lot with a group around two vehicles.

After surveillance, Carrillo-Vega entered his residence and returned to the lot, where he and others were subsequently detained by assisting detectives.

A search of Carrillo-Vega’s bedroom led to the discovery of a firearm loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition, along with extra ammunition.

Carrillo-Vega was arrested, and the others present were released.

Carrillo-Vega faces multiple charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm on a public way, possession of a high-capacity magazine/feeding device, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, improper storage of a large capacity firearm near a minor, and possession of a firearm without an FID card.
