Waterford police launch initiative to combat retail theft

1 min read

WATERFORD — Amid a rise in retail thefts, the Waterford Police Department is rolling out a new initiative to help local businesses tackle the issue.

In a statement released Monday, the department noted that many thefts don’t get public attention, but they are actively working on preventative measures.

The latest incident occurred at a Target on July 31, where two individuals worked in tandem to steal a PS5 game controller.

Security footage shows one subject in a dark shirt breaking open the packaging and another in a red shirt concealing the item before both exited the store.

A female accomplice was seen driving the getaway vehicle.

The theft resulted in a loss of $199.99.

Waterford police are reaching out to businesses affected by theft to discuss the new program, with coordinators expected to make visits soon.

The department has also asked the community for assistance in identifying the suspects.

If anyone recognizes the individuals or comes across a new PS5 controller, possibly used to play “Madden 2025,” they are encouraged to contact Officer Winakor at 860-442-9451 ext. 2238 or email [email protected].

Private messages to the department’s social media page are also welcome.
