St. Johnsbury man arrested on warrant after driving on rail trail

ST. JOHNSBURY — A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly driving an SUV on the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail and removing barricades at High Street.

St. Johnsbury Police Department officers, with assistance from troopers at the St. Johnsbury Barracks, responded to the scene around 1:46 p.m. where they encountered George Phelps, 42, of St. Johnsbury.

Phelps was identified and found to have an outstanding warrant from Caledonia County.

The warrant was for charges including possession of less than 2.5 grams of cocaine and possession of a depressant, stimulant, or narcotic in an amount less than 100 times the dosage.

Following the incident, Phelps was taken into custody and lodged at Northeast Regional Correctional Facility due to his inability to post the $200 bail.
