Rhode Island resident killed in crosswalk by vehicle

NEWPORT, RI — A 52-year-old local resident was fatally struck by a car while crossing Broadway at Bedlow Avenue in a designated crosswalk late Monday night.

The Newport Rhode Island Police Department reported the incident occurred at approximately 10:23 p.m. According to the initial investigation, the pedestrian was hit by a vehicle driven by a 56-year-old local man.

The Newport Fire Department responded quickly, and the victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Authorities are in the process of notifying the victim’s family.

The driver, who has not been charged criminally, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and operating a vehicle without insurance.

The Police Department is continuing its investigation into the tragic accident and is asking any witnesses who haven’t yet provided a statement, or anyone with additional information, to contact them at 401-847-1306.
