WELLS — All lanes of the Maine Turnpike have reopened following a tractor-trailer crash that disrupted traffic in both directions at mile marker 22 early Tuesday morning.
Maine State Police responded to the scene shortly after the accident occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. The initial investigation suggests that the driver of the tractor-trailer, while traveling southbound in the rain, lost control, veered off the roadway to the left, and collided with a guardrail.
The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle, resulting in the blockage of two southbound passing lanes and two northbound passing lanes.
The truck driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Although the tractor-trailer was mostly empty, it was carrying some plumbing supplies that were scattered across the northbound lanes following the crash.
Ray’s Towing arrived on the scene to assess and manage the cleanup and recovery of the vehicle.
Drivers had been advised to avoid the area during the closure.
The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
Maine State Police have been assisted by the Maine Turnpike Authority, the Wells Police Department, and the Kennebunk Fire Department in managing the incident and ensuring the road was safe for reopening to the public.
