YORK — Police are alerting the public of a scam involving a woman falsely claiming to represent Central Maine Power (CMP), reportedly targeting residents in the area of Route 103 and York Street.
Authorities received a report within the last hour that a middle-aged female approached a home, alleging the homeowner had overdue electric bills.
The York Maine Police Department emphasized that CMP does not conduct such in-person solicitations and has deemed the activity fraudulent.
The suspect is described as a middle-aged female, wearing denim-colored shorts and a multi-colored tank top.
Residents are urged to refuse payment and immediately contact the York Police Department at 363-4444 if approached by the individual or anyone else claiming to represent CMP demanding payment for utilities.
YPD stresses the importance of not providing payment to those soliciting at the door and encourages residents to verify any claims of past due bills by contacting the company through a trusted phone number.
The department takes scams, particularly those conducted in person, very seriously and is seeking to identify the person involved.
Victims of the scam or those with additional information are advised to reach out to the police.
The community is reminded to stay vigilant and safe.
