WALTHAM — Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Waltham Chief of Police Kevin O’Connell announced the arrest of Melanie Williams, 30, for assault and battery on a household or family member in connection with an altercation that preceded a fatal shooting over the weekend.

Police were dispatched to a Second Avenue parking lot adjacent to an apartment complex at about 11:30 p.m. on August 2, where they found Zharia Wilcox-Ellis, 24, also of Waltham, with a fatal gunshot wound.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the events leading up to the shooting revealed a conflict outside the apartment building where Williams lives and where Wilcox-Ellis was known to frequent.

Surveillance footage allegedly captured Williams striking Wilcox-Ellis during the altercation.

Williams is scheduled for arraignment today in Waltham District Court.

As authorities continue to investigate the shooting, they urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the Waltham Police Department at 781-314-3550.

The case is being handled by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Waltham Police.
