Fairfield police recover body of missing swimmer near Penfield Reef

FAIRFIELD — A male swimmer who went missing near Lighthouse Point and Penfield Reef was found deceased after a multi-agency water rescue operation on Aug. 3.

The Fairfield County Regional Dispatch Center received an emergency call at about 12:10 p.m. reporting two individuals struggling in the water.

Bystanders were able to assist one person to safety, but the second male was not immediately located.

Fairfield Police and Fire Departments, along with the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, Fairfield Office of Emergency Management, Westport Police and Fire Departments, Trumbull Police, AMR Ambulance, and the U.S.

Coast Guard, responded to the scene.

After nearly three hours of search and rescue efforts, the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter located the missing individual at around 3:00 p.m. Fairfield Police personnel retrieved the man and brought him to shore aboard a marine unit.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased and are extending their condolences to his family.

Officials thanked all responding agencies for their rapid and expert assistance in the operation and expressed gratitude for the community’s support and cooperation.

They stated that further updates will be issued if more information becomes available.
