DERRY — A fire on the roof of Pinkerton Academy’s Science Building was quickly extinguished Thursday afternoon, with no injuries reported.

The Derry Fire Department received a 911 call at 2:22 p.m. from a contractor reporting the fire at 5 Pinkerton Street.

Multiple fire units from Derry and surrounding towns responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed an active fire on the roof with light smoke inside the 68,999-square-foot, three-story building.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze from both the third floor and the roof while Derry Police assisted with evacuation of the first and second floors.

The fire was brought under control by 3 p.m. Fire Marshal David Eastman is investigating the cause but said it appears to have started in an area under construction related to roof work and is not believed to be suspicious.

At the time of the incident, the building was minimally occupied by contractors and Pinkerton Academy employees.

The structure is equipped with fire alarm and sprinkler systems.

Additional assistance was provided by Chester and Auburn ladder trucks, a Nashua engine, and the Derry Community Emergency Response Team.

Station coverage was provided by fire departments from Bedford, Pelham, Atkinson and Hudson.
