MECHANIC FALLS — A woman and her two young daughters were found dead in their home Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The bodies of Jennifer Barney, 37, and her children, Hope West, 7, and Harmony West, 11, were discovered by police responding to a report of a stolen U-Haul truck at 5 Highland Ave. around 3:30 p.m. on July 27.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the children were victims of homicide, while Barney died by suicide, according to Mechanic Falls Police Chief Jeffrey Goss.
Officers initially arrived at the residence to investigate a U-Haul truck reported stolen after it was not returned.
They found the vehicle at the address and attempted to contact Barney, who had rented the truck.
Upon entering the home, officers discovered the three bodies.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit was called to lead the investigation, following standard protocol for such cases.
The local animal control officer was called to take custody of pets found in the home until next of kin can be reached and their placement determined.
The Androscoggin Sheriff’s Office assisted the Mechanic Falls Police Department in the initial response to the scene.
Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths or potential motives as the investigation continues.
