NORTH ADAMS — A suspect was arrested Friday following an armed robbery at a Walmart and subsequent police chase, authorities said.

The incident began around 7 a.m. when employees at the North Adams Walmart reported an armed robbery to police.

The suspect allegedly showed a firearm in a backpack to a cashier before taking approximately $5,400 in cash and fleeing in a red pickup truck.

Officers quickly located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit.

The chase ended near Hillside Cemetery, where the suspect abandoned the truck and fled on foot.

Police apprehended the individual after a brief foot chase.

During the arrest, one officer sustained injuries but is expected to fully recover.

Authorities recovered a duffle bag containing an AR-15 pistol with a 30-round high-capacity magazine loaded with 17 rounds.

The stolen cash was also retrieved.

Police later determined the pickup truck had been reported stolen from Bennington, Vermont.

The suspect faces multiple charges, including armed robbery while masked, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm without a license.

Additional charges include larceny of a motor vehicle, assault and battery, and resisting arrest.

The North Adams Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.

Interim-Chief Mark Bailey commended Walmart employees for their quick actions and attention to detail, which he said contributed to the successful apprehension.
