Portland police limit details on Forest Avenue shooting to protect investigation

PORTLAND — In response to numerous inquiries about the recent Forest Avenue shooting, the Portland Police Department has clarified their position on releasing information during active investigations.

Authorities emphasize that the release of certain details can compromise the integrity of ongoing investigations.

The department is currently following guidelines set by the Attorney General’s office, which dictate what information can be made public during a homicide investigation that is pending prosecution.

Major Robert Martin of the Portland Police stated, “The premature release of information can irreversibly harm a criminal investigation and in some cases lead to a dismissal or suppression of evidence.”

Since Tuesday night, nearly a dozen detectives, evidence technicians, and detective supervisors have been working exclusively on the case, gathering hundreds of hours of video footage and conducting interviews with numerous witnesses.

The department’s goals are to ensure the thoroughness, fairness, and accuracy of the investigation, while also considering the potential impact on witness memories and evidence integrity.

The department recognizes the public’s concern for safety and their desire for information.

However, they reaffirm their responsibility to the victim’s family and the public to conduct a detailed investigation and to communicate information responsibly.

Martin also referenced the Intelligence and Investigative Record Information Act, which restricts the public dissemination of intelligence and investigative records when it could interfere with criminal investigations or prosecutions.

The Portland Police Department assures the community that they are working diligently on the case and will share information when it can be done without jeopardizing the outcome of the investigation.
