EXETER — A box truck driver misjudged the height of a railroad overpass bridge on Newfields Road and became wedged underneath it shortly before 10 a.m. today.
The Exeter Police Department reported that the driver was unharmed in the incident, but the truck’s roof was severely damaged.
The New England Truck Center was called to the scene to extract the stuck vehicle.
As a result of the crash, traffic on Newfields Road was squeezed into one lane, but officers managed to keep it flowing.
The overpass, with a clearance of only 11 feet 8 inches, has been the site of numerous similar incidents over its 132-year existence.
Today’s accident serves as another prompt for large vehicle operators to observe the cautionary signs surrounding the bridge.
These signs are strategically placed to afford drivers sufficient time to halt and reroute if necessary.
