WILTON — The Town of Wilton and the Wilton Police Department issued an urgent warning on July 30 about a scam involving fraudulent invoices targeting residents and businesses with pending applications before the Planning and Zoning Department.
Scammers are sending out false invoices that appear to come from the Town of Wilton, accompanied by a letter demanding payment to process applications with the Zoning Board of Appeals.
These deceptive documents are crafted with accurate information gleaned from public records, including the names of town employees and the correct names and addresses of Wilton residents, as well as properties they may own elsewhere.
The Wilton Police Department has clarified that the Planning & Zoning Department does not issue invoices through the mail for applications that are still pending.
An example of a counterfeit invoice recently received by a local property owner was provided with the press release.
Residents who have received such fraudulent invoices are urged to immediately contact the Wilton Police Department to report the incident and avoid potential financial loss.
The police are actively investigating the scam and are seeking to apprehend those responsible for attempting to defraud community members.
