LEBANON — A potential tragedy was averted late Monday night when Lebanon Police Department officers successfully negotiated with a man threatening to jump off a bridge on Bridge Street.
Multiple calls came into the police at around 10:20 p.m. about an adult male standing over the bridge’s railing.
Responding officers found the man expressing suicidal thoughts and imminent danger of jumping.
During a critical 20-minute dialogue, police were able to persuade him to climb back to safety and continue the conversation off the bridge.
Traffic was halted during the standoff to ensure the safety of all involved.
The man was later taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for an evaluation and care.
No criminal charges are expected to be filed in connection with the incident.
Lebanon Police highlighted that all their officers have undergone Crisis Intervention Response training, equipping them with the necessary skills to manage crises effectively.
The department reaffirmed its dedication to assisting individuals in distress, aiming to provide support and resources for their safety and mental health.
