MIDDLESEX — A devastating car crash on I-89 northbound claimed the lives of two individuals early Sunday morning.

Vermont State Police, alongside Middlesex Fire Department and FAST Squad, as well as Montpelier Fire Department and Ambulance Service, were called to the scene near mile marker 60.6 at approximately 5:04 a.m. due to reports of a vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, emergency crews encountered a 2006 Lexus ES330 fully engulfed in flames.

The driver and front seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Preliminary investigation by authorities has indicated that high speed was a contributing factor in this single-vehicle incident.

The foggy conditions earlier in the morning did not appear to affect road visibility and traffic was reported to be light.

Further information regarding the crash, including the official identification of the occupants, will be released following next of kin notifications.

The Vermont State Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.
