SOUTH KINGSTOWN — A Narragansett man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Friday afternoon following a single-car accident that led to the closure of Middlebridge Road for several hours.
The South Kingstown Police Department responded at around 4 p.m. to the scene near 1097 Middlebridge Road, where a black Dodge driven by 53-year-old John E.
Disano of Isabelle Drive crashed into a utility pole.
The impact caused the pole to snap and fall, blocking the roadway.
Chief of Police Matthew C. Moynihan emphasized the dangers of impaired driving. “This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of making responsible choices,” Moynihan stated.
Disano exhibited signs of impairment and failed to pass standardized field sobriety tests conducted by the officers.
He also refused a breath and/or chemical test after his arrest.
Officers found and seized a significant quantity of suspected narcotics, potentially leading to further charges upon testing.
Disano was held overnight at the South Kingstown Police Department and is scheduled for arraignment at the station.
The South Kingstown Police remind the public of the severe penalties for driving under the influence, which may include jail time, license suspension, community service, and substantial fines.
Rhode Island law also mandates chemical testing for suspected impaired drivers, with refusal leading to additional penalties.
