ENOSBURGH — A 23-year-old St. Albans man was arrested on a charge of aggravated murder in connection with the death of an 82-year-old Enosburgh woman, Vermont State Police said.
Darren Martell was taken into custody late Thursday night while already detained at the Northwest State Correctional Facility on an unrelated lewd and lascivious conduct charge.
Martell, accused of killing Roberta Martin, is expected to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in St. Albans.
Police say Martell had been living next door to Martin on Butternut Hollow Road.
He has been ordered held without bail pending the arraignment, where the charge will formally be presented.
If convicted of aggravated murder, Martell faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
The arrest followed a collaborative investigation between the Vermont State Police and the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The affidavit of probable cause will become public following the arraignment.
No further details have been released at this time.
