Dirt biker severs fingers in Bellingham sandpit crash

BELLINGHAM — A 24-year-old Franklin man sustained severe injuries Thursday evening when he lost control of his dirt bike and crashed in the Bellingham sandpits, resulting in the severing of multiple fingers.

Bellingham Public Safety Dispatch received a 911 call about the accident at approximately 8:30 p.m., reporting the incident off Depot Street.

Officers Chofay and Gavin from the Bellingham Police, along with the Bellingham Fire Department, were first on the scene.

Upon arrival, responders found the victim with a heavily bleeding hand injury.

A tourniquet was applied to stem the bleeding until paramedics could take over the victim’s care.

The quick actions of the officers allowed them to recover the severed fingers and ensure they were transported with the patient to the hospital for potential reattachment.

Authorities are currently investigating the crash’s cause, with Bellingham Police working in coordination with the Massachusetts Environmental Police.

The victim’s current condition has not been released as the investigation continues.
