Worcester man arrested after hatchet assault

WORCESTER — Worcester Police arrested a man in connection with a violent hatchet attack that took place on Jefferson Street last week.

Authorities responded to a call on July 20 at approximately 11:52 p.m., reporting an assault on Ward Street.

Upon arrival, officers found a victim with a severe neck wound inflicted by an axe.

The injured male received immediate medical attention from the officers before being transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

Following an extensive investigation, Worcester detectives identified 36-year-old Jorge Torres-Maldonado of Pineland Avenue as the suspect.

A warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued.

Torres-Maldonado was apprehended by police on Millbury Street on July 24 around 5:25 p.m. He is facing multiple charges, including Armed Robbery, Armed Assault to Murder, and Aggravated Assault and Battery with serious bodily injury.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Worcester Police Department is urging anyone with additional information to come forward.

The victim’s current condition has not been released.
