Westport police warn of asphalt scam with inflated billing

1 min read

WESTPORT — Residents in Westport are being cautioned by local police about an asphalt company that has been offering paving services at deceptively low prices, only to issue bills significantly higher than the quoted amounts, with some bills tens of thousands of dollars over the initial estimate.

The Westport Police Department issued a scam alert, urging the community to stay vigilant against offers that seem “Too Good To Be True,” as these are often scams.

To avoid falling victim to such deceptive practices, the department provided residents with several tips.

Firstly, the police advise against succumbing to pressure tactics, which are commonly used by scammers to rush individuals into making decisions.

Secondly, residents should never make quick or impulsive decisions in response to offers or requests.

Before agreeing to any service, individuals are encouraged to discuss the offers with family and friends to verify their legitimacy.

Additionally, conducting thorough research on the company in question is recommended, and residents should inform the company that they will make contact if they decide to proceed with any work.

The Westport Police Department also reminds the public that they can always reach out to the police for assistance or if they have any concerns regarding potential scams.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and cautious to protect themselves from fraudulent activities.
