New Haven stream death ruled a homicide by strangulation

NEW HAVEN — A man found face down in a stream on July 19 has been identified as Miguel Rivera, and his death is now being investigated as a homicide by strangulation, according to the New Haven Police Department.

Police officers and fire department personnel responded to the scene near Hemingway Street and Eastern Street at 7:10 a.m. after receiving reports of Rivera’s body.

He was declared deceased by the fire department upon arrival.

Initially, no signs of trauma were found on Rivera’s body at the scene by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME).

However, after an autopsy, the OCME concluded that Rivera, born on Dec. 25, 1961, was a victim of homicide caused by strangulation.

Rivera’s family has been notified of his death.

Police are now appealing to the public for assistance.
