SHREWSBURY — A routine vehicle stop escalated to an arrest for firearms charges early on July 14, when police encountered a loaded handgun during a traffic incident.
Officer Eric Sloan initiated the stop at approximately 3:19 a.m. after spotting a red 2008 Ford Fusion on Rt. 9.
The car, carrying six individuals, pulled into the Tavern in the Square restaurant parking lot.
Two occupants fled the scene as the vehicle came to a halt.
Backup, including Officer Corey Vanbeekom, arrived shortly thereafter.
Vanbeekom observed an attempt by a rear passenger to hide a bag under the seat.
Upon further inspection, officers discovered the bag contained a 9mm handgun loaded with eight rounds.
Additional support from Officers Cal Samuel, Matt Renaud and Sergeant Mark Sklut was crucial in securing the scene.
The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Nicolas Alves-Santos, 18, from Milford.
Alves-Santos faces several charges, including possession of a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without a license, and improper storage of a firearm.
