Motorcycle crash in Salem leaves one injured, closes Route 28

SALEM — A severe motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle and a Jeep Wrangler left one person injured and caused significant traffic disruptions on North Broadway Thursday afternoon.

Salem Police Department patrol units and Salem Fire responded to the crash near 171 North Broadway, in front of Aroma Joe’s, around 4:20 p.m. The motorcycle operator was transported to Lawrence General Hospital and later med flighted to a hospital in Boston for treatment.

Both southbound lanes of North Broadway (Route 28) were shut down from Taylor Street to Francis Street while the Salem Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit (CAR) investigated the scene.

Preliminary findings suggest that the Jeep, driven by a 17-year-old female from Andover, Massachusetts, was making a left turn into the Aroma Joe’s parking lot when it was struck on the passenger side by the motorcycle, heading southbound.

The motorcyclist, identified as 37-year-old Jared Rockwell from Derry, New Hampshire, sustained injuries in the collision.

The area was closed for several hours for the CAR Unit to examine the crash site and vehicles involved.

The incident is still under investigation, and authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with information to contact Detective Arthur Harvey at 603-893-1911.
