SOUTH HERO — A single-vehicle crash on US Route 2 claimed the life of a South Carolina man and left a woman in critical condition on July 17.

Troopers from the St. Albans Barracks were called to the scene near 600 US Route 2 at 7:23 p.m., where they discovered a 2024 Nissan Pathfinder with substantial damage.

Robert Goddard, 77, of Little River, SC, was identified as the driver and Carol Patch-Forguites, 77, also from Little River, was the passenger.

Goddard was pronounced deceased while being transported to the hospital.

Patch-Forguites was taken to UVM Medical Center, where she is being treated for critical injuries sustained in the accident.

The preliminary investigation suggests that while traveling northbound, Goddard’s vehicle left the roadway before Lombard Lane and collided with a cement culvert.

Both occupants were wearing seat belts when the crash occurred.

Emergency services, including the Grand Isle Sheriff’s Department, Grand Isle Rescue, and fire departments from Grand Isle, South Hero, North Hero, Milton, as well as Colchester Rescue, assisted the troopers.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact the Vermont State Police at the St. Albans Barracks by calling (802) 524-5993.
