Fairlee woman arrested for DUI, child cruelty after wrong-way driving incident

FAIRLEE — Vermont State Police arrested a Thetford woman late Sunday night after she was reported driving on the wrong side of US Route 5 North with five children in the vehicle.

At approximately 8:48 p.m., authorities received reports of a wrong-way driver in Fairlee.

Citizens managed to stop the vehicle as state troopers were en route.

Upon arrival, troopers identified the driver as 37-year-old Rachael Rich of Thetford.

According to the police, Rich exhibited severe signs of alcohol impairment.

Rich was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI #2 Refusal, Gross Negligent Operation, and five counts of Cruelty to a Child due to the presence of minors in the vehicle during the incident.

She was processed at the St. Johnsbury State Police Barracks.

Rachael Rich is slated to appear at the Orange County Court in Chelsea on July 31 at 8:30 a.m. to respond to the charges.
