Somerville sees spate of break-ins and assaults, make several arrests

SOMERVILLE — A series of breaking and entering incidents, assaults, and thefts have plagued Somerville residents over the past week, prompting multiple responses from the Somerville Police Department.

On the morning of July 10, police were called to a residence on Vernon Street where a victim reported that a male suspect had stolen a bicycle and an electric scooter from his garage.

Two days later, on July 12, another break-in was reported on the same street, with two bikes being stolen from a different home.

Assaults have also been a concern.

Early on July 12, officers found a man on College Avenue with a head injury who reported being hit from behind with a crowbar in Seven Hills Park.

The previous evening, July 9, a woman was threatened with a bike lock on Powder House Boulevard after an altercation with a male on the bike path.

In another violent incident, a juvenile reported being attacked on July 11 in Union Square.

Police arrested the female assailant who had also destroyed some of the victim’s possessions.

The police have also been active in recovering illegal items.

On July 12, during a motor vehicle stop at the intersection of Pearl Street and Delaware Street, officers arrested an individual with an active warrant and seized a loaded firearm and roughly 30 grams of crack cocaine from the vehicle.

Additional assaults included an incident on July 13, where a man reportedly brandished a gun during an argument on Rose Street, and another on July 12 at Assembly Row where a driver kicked a victim and then hit three people with his vehicle while fleeing.

The string of break-ins included thefts from a property under construction on Central Street and a common hallway on Alpine Street, with tools and bicycles being the primary targets.

Several arrests have been made in connection to other crimes, including a man who threw bottles at a victim on Dartmouth Street and another who broke into and assaulted his neighbor on Summer Street.

Beyond the highlighted events, the police have also reported three bike thefts, two car break-ins, four package thefts, one vandalism case, one moped theft, one motor vehicle vandalism, and one motor vehicle theft in the community.
