MILFORD — A 46-year-old man was arrested early Monday after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and threatening to blow up their house, leading to a tense standoff and the evacuation of several children.

William Abernathy of Milford faces multiple charges, including domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and criminal restraint, following the incident that began around 12:50 a.m. on July 15.

The Old Town Police Department was alerted by a male victim who reported the assault and bomb threat.

Officers then located the female assault victim, who confirmed the information.

When police arrived at the Call Road residence, they encountered Abernathy outside, carrying a large knife and other weapons.

He initially complied with orders to drop the weapons.

Officers entering the house detected gas and heard cries for help from a locked upstairs bedroom.

They broke down the door and evacuated three children.

Another person requiring assistance was also safely removed from the home.

Due to the potential presence of explosive devices, local fire departments and a hazardous materials team were called to the scene.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office and Maine State Police Bomb Team later conducted controlled detonations of multiple devices.

Abernathy was arrested on several charges, including domestic violence assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
