NEW BEDFORD — A repeat offender was arrested Sunday on weapons charges following a disturbance in the city’s south end.

Police responded to the intersection of David St. and Salisbury St. on July 7 after receiving reports of a man brandishing a firearm.

Officer James Sullivan located the suspect, Marcell Goncalves, 27, of 25 Dudley St., reaching into a cross-body bag.

When Sullivan approached, Goncalves threw the bag to the ground and attempted to flee but was subdued and detained with help from a bystander.

Goncalves was found in possession of brass knuckles, a knife, and a loaded P80 Polymer “Ghost gun” without a serial number, which contained 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

He was charged with carrying a large-capacity loaded firearm without a license, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm without a serial number.

With a previous conviction for firearm possession in 2018 and an open case for possession of a high-capacity feeding device from April, Goncalves has a record of 19 adult arraignments, 13 of which resulted in dismissals.

Currently held without bail at the Dartmouth House of Correction, anyone with information related to Goncalves or the incident is encouraged to contact the New Bedford Police Department anonymously through their website at newbedfordpd.com or by calling 508-99-CRIME.
