Missing New Sharon man found alive after wilderness ordeal

NEW SHARON — A 75-year-old man reported missing earlier this week was found alive but injured in a remote area after a multi-day search involving several law enforcement agencies and search teams.

Michael Altmier, who had been expected to give a presentation at Camp Kawanhee on Monday evening, did not show up, prompting concerns for his wellbeing.

After he was reported missing, a county-wide search ensued, eventually extending into Oxford County when an emergency geo-location request placed his phone about 10 miles from a cell tower in Woodstock.

His vehicle, later deemed suspicious by staff at Mt.

Blue State Park, was located Thursday night, but Altmier was not found until Friday afternoon by a Maine Warden Service K9 team.

He had reportedly slipped and fell at Center Hill Lookout in Weld, then managed to walk and crawl over half a mile from the site of his fall.

The search, which included efforts by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Maine Warden Service, Franklin Search and Rescue, and other agencies, culminated in Altmier being airlifted from the site by Maine Forestry Services and transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar EMS.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple teams, Altmier was rescued and is currently in stable condition.
