PIERMONT — A boating incident at Lake Tarleton resulted in the death of a Bedford man, state police said Wednesday.

Michael A. Johnson, 58, died after the canoe he was in with another man overturned at about 9:28 a.m. on July 5.

According to the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol unit, the two men were fishing when their canoe capsized, plunging them into the water.

Authorities said life jackets were available in the canoe but neither man was wearing one when the vessel flipped.

After the capsize, one man noticed Johnson face down in the water while they attempted to stay afloat and retrieve their equipment.

Bystanders in a nearby boat came to aid, and despite life-saving efforts, Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Troopers from Troop F, local police, and emergency medical services responded to the incident, with the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner also assisting.

Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
