Medford police arrest five after high-speed chase, crash

MEDFORD — Medford police apprehended five individuals following a high-speed vehicle pursuit that ended with a crash on Thursday, July 4.

The chase began after the Medford Emergency Communications Center received a report of a shoplifting incident at DICK’s Sporting Goods on Mystic Valley Parkway at approximately 11 a.m.

The suspects had fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, heading toward Riverside Avenue.

Officers spotted the suspect vehicle on Riverside Avenue and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated, leading police on a pursuit through Commercial Street and onto Route 16 westbound, continuing to Winthrop Street and High Street.

The pursuit concluded when the vehicle crashed through a residential fence on Alto Drive.

Two suspects were detained on the scene, while three others attempted to flee.

One was caught shortly thereafter, and the remaining two were found hiding in the vicinity and arrested.

No injuries were reported among the officers or suspects.

Identifications and charges are currently pending for the five individuals involved.

The Medford Police Department thanked the Massachusetts State Police K9 and Airwing Units, as well as the Arlington Police K9 Unit, for their assistance during the incident.
