EVERETT — Police arrested a Haverhill man on gun and drug charges Monday following a four-hour search near the Gateway Mall.

Sergio Sanchez, 38, was taken into custody around 11 a.m. after officers responded to a call on Dane Street earlier that morning, Everett police said.

A homeowner reported someone had placed two bags under their porch.

Officers found two loaded firearms and a loaded magazine in the bags.

The resident later called again to report the suspect had returned looking for the bags, prompting a search involving multiple agencies.

Massachusetts State Police, including troopers, air support and K-9 units, assisted Everett police.

Wakefield Police K-9 and MBTA Transit Police also aided in the search.

Sanchez was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for minor injuries.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Malden District Court.

Everett Police Chief Paul Strong praised the interagency cooperation, calling it “an excellent example of teamwork and tenacity.”

All charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
