NEW HAVEN — A New Haven man was sentenced Friday to 7 years in federal prison for his role in the armed robbery of a North Haven gas station in 2022.
Robert Smith, 20, also known as “Robbie,” received 84 months imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
According to court documents, Smith assisted Christian Borrero of New Haven in robbing a Shell station at 195 State St. in North Haven at gunpoint on July 6, 2022.
Smith then drove Borrero and a juvenile accomplice to Meriden, where they stole a car from a woman’s driveway.
Smith pleaded guilty on Sept. 28 to aiding and abetting Hobbs Act robbery and aiding and abetting the use of a firearm during a violent crime.
He has been detained since Jan. 3.
Borrero previously pleaded guilty to related charges and was sentenced April 1 to 14 years in prison.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives led the investigation with assistance from local police departments.
The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Justice Department initiative to reduce gun violence.
