West Haven man charged after attempting to ram police vehicle

WEST HAVEN — A West Haven man was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including Assault of a Public Safety Officer, after attempting to run a police vehicle off the road, authorities said.

Imran Ahmed, born Oct. 16, 1969, was taken into custody today after a series of events that began around 1:58 p.m. when a West Haven Police Officer reported a vehicle attempting to strike his marked patrol car.

The incident occurred on Meloy Road near Route 1 and continued onto Saw Mill Road as the officer headed towards Police Headquarters, providing updates to dispatch.

Additional police units responded, and the situation escalated when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into another marked patrol car that was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Greta Street and Saw Mill Road.

Officers at the scene quickly apprehended Ahmed.

Ahmed faces charges including Carrying a Dangerous Weapon, Reckless Driving, Assault of a Public Safety Officer, Illegal Possession of a Weapon in a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree, and Failing to Drive in Proper Lane.

He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

The West Haven Police Department’s Detective Division has taken over the investigation, treating the incident as a deliberate attack on law enforcement officers.

The department will provide more information as the investigation continues.
