Fatal head-on collision on I-89 in Montpelier leaves one dead, another injured

MONTPELIER — A fatal head-on collision involving two vehicles occurred on Interstate 89 southbound near Exit 8, resulting in one death and serious injuries on June 26.

Jason Ball, 50, of Barre, was pronounced dead at the scene after his 2015 Chevrolet Malibu crossed the median from the northbound lane and collided with a 2016 Honda CR-V driven by 46-year-old Kelly Pelletier of Plainfield.

Ball was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and his vehicle was totaled.

Pelletier, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Central Vermont Medical Center for treatment.

Pelletier’s vehicle was also totaled in the crash.

The Vermont State Police Berlin Barracks and Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the accident at 7:37 p.m. under clear weather and road conditions.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Authorities are seeking information from the public that could assist in the investigation.

Emergency responders from the Middlesex and Montpelier Fire Departments, as well as the Agency of Transportation, provided assistance at the crash site.
