SPOFFORD — A tragic motor vehicle accident on Route 9 claimed the lives of two drivers and left one passenger critically injured on Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 4:09 p.m., Chesterfield Police Department, joined by New Hampshire State Police, Chesterfield Fire and Rescue, Spofford Fire and Rescue, and the Keene Police Department, responded to a severe crash east of Candy Lane.
On arrival, medical teams determined that the drivers of both involved vehicles, a blue Ford Mustang and a Toyota Highlander, were deceased at the scene.
The Mustang, which had been traveling westbound on Route 9, apparently veered across the solid yellow line into the path of the eastbound Highlander, resulting in a head-on collision.
A passenger from the Mustang was transported to Cheshire Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Due to the severity of her condition, she was later airlifted to Dartmouth Medical Center in Lebanon by DHART.
Authorities have withheld the identities of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
The Chesterfield Police Department is conducting a preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident.
