Speeding driver arrested for DUI with children in vehicle in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Vermont State Police arrested a West Rupert man for driving under the influence and other charges after he was caught speeding with two children in his vehicle on U.S.

Route 7. On June 28 at approximately 5:32 p.m., troopers conducting speed enforcement near the intersection of U.S.

Route 7 and Lime Kiln Road observed a silver SUV traveling north at 82 mph in a 50 mph zone.

After stopping the vehicle, police identified the driver as John K. Richardson, 39.

Two juveniles were also present in the car.

Troopers observed signs of impairment and screened Richardson for DUI.

He was subsequently arrested for DUI (second offense), negligent operation, excessive speed, and two counts of cruelty to a child.

Richardson was processed at the New Haven State Police Barracks and released to a sober party.

He was issued a citation to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court on July 16 at 8:30 a.m.

Additional violations included operating a vehicle without a valid inspection and without proof of insurance.

The Shelburne Police Department assisted troopers at the scene.
