Scammer impersonates sheriff’s officer in Maine county

1 min read

BELFAST — The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert Tuesday warning residents about a scammer impersonating one of their officers.

According to the sheriff’s office, several reports have been received of a caller claiming to be “Master Sergeant Matthew Phillips” from their department.

The impersonator tells people they have outstanding warrants and instructs them to send money via a Hannaford supermarket kiosk to resolve the issue.

Officials emphasized this is a scam and urged the public not to engage with or provide any funds to the caller.

The sheriff’s office does not solicit payments for warrants in this manner.

Residents who receive such calls are advised to report them to local law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incidents.
