Fatal crash on Interstate 89 in Montpelier leaves one dead, one injured

MONTPELIER — A two-vehicle collision on Interstate 89 Wednesday afternoon left one person dead and another seriously injured, Vermont State Police reported.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:37 p.m. near Exit 8 on the southbound lane of I-89.

According to investigators, a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu traveling northbound crossed the median for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a southbound 2016 Honda CR-V.

The driver of the Malibu, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Honda’s driver, Kelly Pelletier, 46, of Plainfield, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Central Vermont Medical Center for treatment.

Both vehicles were totaled in the collision.

Weather and road conditions were reported as clear at the time of the incident.

The Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the cause of the crash.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Berlin Barracks at 802-229-9191.

Middlesex and Montpelier Fire Departments, along with the Agency of Transportation, assisted state police at the scene.
