NEW HAVEN — A New Haven police officer was hospitalized with serious facial injuries after being assaulted while responding to a domestic dispute early Saturday morning.
Officer Maribel Buccitti suffered a concussion and other facial injuries when she was punched by a suspect while attempting to break up a fight in the Fair Haven neighborhood at 12:02 a.m. on June 22, according to police.
Officers arrived at the scene to find Wesley Gill allegedly attacking a woman as a crowd, including children, attempted to intervene.
When officers tried to stop Gill, he struck Buccitti in the face, police said.
Gill was arrested and faces multiple charges, including assault on a police officer, second-degree assault, and three counts of risk of injury to a minor.
He is being held on a $250,000 bond.
Buccitti was hospitalized for 24 hours due to her injuries.
Police Chief Karl Jacobson praised the officers’ swift response and highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement.
“This incident shows the dangers our officers face on every call,” Jacobson said in a statement. “We are ready to respond any time of the day and night to anyone who needs help, even at the risk of our own safety.”
