ACUSHNET — A 36-year-old man was arrested late Friday night in connection with an armed robbery at a local convenience store, Acushnet police said.

James E. Stanzione of New Bedford was taken into custody at 11:35 p.m. after officers found him hiding in a bedroom closet at a residence on Main Street, according to police.

The robbery occurred around 10:02 p.m. at New England Farms gas station and convenience store at 158 Main St.

Police said a masked suspect dressed in black entered the store, brandished a firearm, and demanded money from the clerk before fleeing toward Wing Road.

Officers identified a suspect associated with a nearby residence and searched a home at 170 Main St. with the resident’s permission.

There, they found Stanzione and recovered cash believed to be from the robbery, along with clothing and a Glock replica BB pistol allegedly used in the crime.

Stanzione is charged with armed and masked robbery.

He was also arrested on three unrelated outstanding warrants.

He is scheduled for arraignment Monday morning in New Bedford District Court.

Acushnet Police Chief Christopher Richmond praised the officers’ quick response and teamwork in apprehending the suspect.

Officers from Fairhaven and Mattapoisett police departments assisted at the scene.
